Dos and don'ts of summer fashion

Baby Phat 2007

Fashion is like anything else: If you want to stay in the game, you have to know the rules. Summer in the city can be unbearable if you don't know how to dress for it. Here are a few tips.

Don't wear your skirts too short. They may be cute and fun, but when you sit down on the subway, your skin touches the seat -- not the best feeling on a hot day.

Do wear a drifty dress that reaches to just below the knee.

Don't wear rolled-up socks. They went out with the '70s.
Do wear cute little anklets.

Don't carry your valuables around in a backpack -- don't make things easy for a pickpocket.
Do carry a messenger bag close to your body.

Don't insist on wearing all black. It's far too hot.
Do wear light colors and fun prints that don't attract heat. Try ice-cream colored linens or bold, bright cottons.

Don't wear blouses that are too sheer.
Do wear flax-colored linens for an airy feel without overexposure.

Don't try to go sightseeing in stilettos.
Do choose a great pair of mesh Pumas. They're fashionable and comfy for walking around town.

Don't try to be Carrie Bradshaw. Remember, that was television.
