Fashion flashback: Salt 'n Pepa

Salt N Pepa
Hearing the news that Salt 'n Pepa are reuniting to feature in a new reality TV show for VH1 suddenly got me thinking about the fashion legacy the girls of hip hop helped to create before the likes of TLC and Destiny's Child were born. For those old enough to remember Cheryl James "Salt", Sandra Denton "Pepper" and of course Dee Dee Roper "Spinderella" when they first hit the scene in the late eighties/early nineties, their music wasn't the only thing to get people talking. With steamy tracks such as "Let's Talk About Sex" and "Whatta Man" the girls used popular fashion trends to add an unforgettable style element to their group. This consisted of heavy shoulder pads, acid-wash jeans, chunky gold jewellery, hot pants, neon, Reebok trainers and midriff tops. Ah... those were the days!

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who danced around in their bedroom singing along to "Shoop" while wearing cut-off denim shorts and scrunch socks.

Gangsta and lover: Fabolous is one or the other

Fabolous

For a second, all the pre-album minidramas might have made you forget about the real Fabolous.

There was the name change. F-A... B-O... L-O... U-S wasn't doing it anymore, so he started stamping his verses with ``Loso.''

There was the whole Sebastian Telfair incident, in which members of Fab's posse were videotaped snatching a neck chain from the Boston Celtics player. Fab got a bullet in his leg later that night; Telfair has denied involvement.

All that brought back memories of this Brooklyn rapper with a vicious freestyle and dope mixtapes who hit the streets and the radio hard with his debut album, Ghetto Fabolous.

But if you quickly scan the track list for Fab's fourth album, From Nothin' to Somethin', you'll see a bunch of features that look like he picked them from the R&B tree -- Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Rihanna, Lloyd, and Lil' Mo -- and remember that after his first CD he became the post-LL, pre-Cassidy chick-record rapper.

There are a bunch of them on this album. Rihanna sounds like Beyonce on First Time. Fab weaves around Ne-Yo's high hums and Timbaland's bass thumps on Make Me Better (it's a ``swagger track,'' Fab claims, not a chick record). He reunites with Lil' Mo (was Superwoman really seven years ago?) on What Should I Do.

But the highlight of the soft cuts is a collaboration with Lloyd on Real Playa Like, a breezy beat put together by Polow Da Don with a very retro-Neptunes sound.

That said, with Fab, there's no real median between his lover and his gangsta. He's one or the other.

On the rest of the album he's repping Brooklyn with Jay-Z and Uncle Murda, switching vocations (boss man, weatherman, ice man, dope man) on I'm the Man, talking dope boy to dope boy with Pusha T of the Clipse on Jokes on You, and flashing rap's requisite ``shoot you in the chest, I'll wet you'' flow.

Missing from the album version of Diamonds is Lil' Wayne's mixtape cameo. In its place is a verse from Young Jeezy, which is unfortunate.

The album is stuffed to the max with features (13 cameos on 14 tracks not including the intro). Eminem has called this cheating. But because Fab has such a strong flow and you rarely get enough of it on his albums, you always end up feeling cheated.

New look has risks

Some seemingly harmless cosmetic procedures could lead to infection, hair loss or worse

The effort to look good can range from putting on makeup to braving the risk of skin cancer by basking in the sun to the scary extreme of body dysmorphic disorder -- a condition in which people despise their looks so much that they endure years of serial plastic surgery.

Some efforts border on the ridiculous.

For example, a relatively new form of elective eye surgery replaces a healthy cornea with a colored artificial lens.

And some women undergo foot surgery to help them fit into more fashionable shoes.

Other efforts are more common.

"If a little bit of lipstick and blush allows you to feel brighter, that's OK," says psychotherapist Heather Raznick. "But is it interfering with your ability to function? Is it a way to bypass your interior?"

Raznick blames pressure from the media for many unrealistic goals regarding personal appearance. Women especially are bombarded with images "that are only attainable by a small percentage of people," she says.

Nevertheless, you may be putting your health at risk for the sake of appearances. Here are some examples:

Tattoos and piercings

The biggest danger comes from dirty tools. HIV, hepatitis C, hepatitis B and other blood-borne diseases can be spread with tattoo needles. Even with sterile tools, anything that punctures the skin can push germs from outside the skin inside your body. Also, be aware of allergic reactions to red and yellow dye. Those tend to be mild and short-lived but not so rare.

Artificial nails: Artificial nails can trap germs that cause infections. It's best, doctors say, to use fake nails only for special occasions, then to remove them and go natural. In addition, dirty tools can spread hepatitis, HIV, herpes and other diseases carried in the bloodstream from one customer to another.

Braids: Pulling the hair so tight that it hurts can cause permanent hair loss later in life. If it's painful, it's too tight.

Hair chemicals: Most chemicals are safe and regulated. A debate rages as to whether chemical burns, dyes and straighteners cause hair loss after age 40 or 50. Most hair loss is genetic. But inconclusive evidence points to a lifetime of bleaches, dyes and burns from straightening chemicals as being deadly for hair follicles.

Say Goodbye to Dimpled Thighs

Women just might have a fighting chance to diminish the appearance of cellulite through collagenase enzyme injections, according to a preliminary clinical study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

In the study, female patients received collagenase injections in their thighs. Subjective measurements of the cellulite and photographs were taken before and after the procedure. Within one day, patients had a 77 percent decrease in the appearance of cellulite. After six months, results remained noticeable, with patients experiencing a 76 percent decrease. There was no significant change in the patient's body mass index or thigh measurements. At six months, all patients said they either were very or completely satisfied with their results. The only side effects, which lasted one to two weeks, were soreness, mild swelling and bruising.

"The promise of nonsurgical methods for diminishing cellulite is clearly appealing and, if it works, it will be a breakthrough for millions of women who struggle with cellulite," concludes ASPS President Bruce Cunningham. "However, there needs to be further scientific study to determine the overall effectiveness, safety, and duration of results."

The cottage cheese appearance of cellulite is caused by the restriction of fibrous strands as they pull down the skin at attachment points.

Mariah Carey

According to Women's Wear Daily, Carey unveiled the aptly titled fragrance, "M," to fashion and beauty editors yesterday in New York City. As previously reported on SOHH, Carey is currently in the studio laying tracks for the follow up to her 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi, with long time collaborator and producer Jermaine Dupri.

The as yet untitled album is slated to hit shelves this fall.

Soft, flowing dresses are the must-have in summer fashion

Adrianna Papell Floral Silk Halter Dress

OK, ladies: When was the last time you wore a dress?

Can't remember? No matter. You can refresh your memory in the coming months.

Dresses are the must-have item for summer, and they come in shapes that are decidedly retro: tents, trapeze, empire waist, wrap, smocks, bubbles, shirtdresses, jumpers, sundresses, minidresses.

You might have hated them the first time around. But before you recoil in terror, know that this time the dresses are constructed so you don't look like you just jumped out of an airplane and opened your parachute.

The secret is better materials and construction.

``Anyone can wear these dresses because they are so versatile,'' said David Hacker, vice president of trends and color for Wisconsin-based Kohl's Department Stores. ``The wrap, shirtdress and sundress will be huge.''

Amy Christensen, clothing manager at Terra Verde, a boutique in downtown Colorado Springs, Colo., is also enthusiastic about the dress. ``They are easy to wear -- fun and free-flowing and comfortable.''

What helps makes dresses attractive this time around are soft, flowing fabrics, Christensen says. Jerseys with gathering around the waist are particularly flattering.

If you're not a dress person, consider that dresses are the epitome of versatility, ease and comfort. You can throw one on to run errands, go to work or step out for a night out on the town without spending half an hour searching the closet for tops and bottoms that match, Christensen says.

Fashion experts say there's a dress style for every body. Smocks and voluminous dresses usually look better on younger women. Styles that flatter many baby boomers are the looser sheaths and shirtdresses. It's just a matter of spending some time in the dressing room to find which works for you.

Be advised: If you're thinking of ignoring summer dresses and waiting out the trend, think again. Dresses are the designers' choice for fall and winter, too. They will be layered with long-sleeved shirts, cardigans and jackets, worn with slender pants and tights, and accented with boots.

How to wear a dress

• Dress lengths are all over the place, from miniskirt to ankle length. Just make sure it's in proportion to the rest of the dress.

• You can find some solid colors, but prints are the big news -- especially geometric patterns, polka dots and bold florals.

• Black and white together is the top color choice. Also hot for summer are greens, browns and reds.

• Sandals, ballet flats, heels and even flip-flops are the footwear to pair with dresses. Pantyhose need not apply.

Deelishis in new play "Drama in the Shop"

Salons are like second homes for black women. They're group therapy sessions where secrets are shared. Stylists are moonlighting as strippers to earn money for school; elderly hairdressers struggle to help younger employees make sound decisions. Meanwhile, competition between salons is fierce.

Dorothea Sharon and Dwane Davis, co-writers of Drama in the Shop, first discussed the possibility of a play highlighting urban salon culture with Carlton "Cool C" Mosley a few years ago. Mosley is the Diddy of Detroit hairstylists, an industry celebrity with a hair magazine and radio show to his credit. He'd already produced a DVD docu-drama on the subject, featuring testimonies and re-enactments of typical scenarios. Mosley and his co-executive producer Tanya Davis (no relation to Dwane Davis) decided they wanted to offer a realistic stage experience about hair culture in the lives of its patrons and proprietors.

The partners hired writers Sharon and Davis, whose joint and individual works include If These Hips Could Talk, Strong Women Keep Coming and Soulfood: The Last Supper. TJ Hemphill, whose earlier projects include the urban theatrical legend Perilous Times, came on board as director. Guest stars include video vixen Buffie the Body, Deelishis (the Detroit native and winner of the last season of VH1 show Flava of Love) and comedian AJ Johnson.

"It's comedy. It's spoken word. It's the hair battle," Sharon says. The play includes a competition similar to fabled hair shows that have been an urban staple for years, and a performance by Hot Lava recording artist Stretch Money. "And it's urban, something for literary folks, and something for Hollyhood."

Crowds flock to Russell Simmons book signing

Russell Simmons got the reception of a statesman. The All-Star Marching Band — twirlers and dancers included — performed outside the Shrine of the Black Madonna, and the music he helped put out — by LL Cool J and Run-DMC — played loudly as perhaps 400 people filed into the intimate chapel inside the bookstore.

It was an overwhelming showing for a midday book signing in the middle of the week, for a guy who made his fortune behind the scenes as a record company executive.

"What do you think?" said Patrick Truesdale. "He is like the black president."

Sean "Solo" Jemison made perhaps an even bolder comparison: "He's almost like MLK," Jemison said, pointing to a book with a black-and-white photo of Martin Luther King Jr. on the cover. "He gave us the avenue for a new type of freedom."

In the 1980s, Simmons helped bring rap to the masses. Along with Rick Rubin, he started Def Jam Records and signed his brother Joey to the label. Run-DMC's cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way became the first rap single to break the Top 5 on the mainstream charts. It became an MTV staple.

Simmons became a diversified entrepreneur. He founded the clothing lines Phat Farm and Baby Phat, with the help of his partner and estranged wife, Kimora Lee Simmons. His firm Rush Communications raked in upward of $360 million in 2005.

His new book Do You!: 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success (Gotham, $25) is a New York Times best-seller.

By 1 p.m. Tuesday, an hour after the scheduled start time, the crowd had grown so large the event was moved from the bookstore into the adjacent Pan African Orthodox Christian Church. After a couple of poetry performances by local artists, Simmons was introduced by Mathew Knowles, father and manager of superstar Beyoncé.

Simmons walked up the altar, unassuming, without his signature cap, wearing an orange T-shirt and jeans. He opened with an apology, sort of.

"I was told I was going to a book signing," he said. "So I didn't know what to talk about."

People laughed.

"But when I saw so many people I got inspired."

Simmons speaks softly with a slight New York accent. He has a small frame — he's a vegan — and a bald head. In brief remarks he talked about spirituality. He touched on Buddhist themes such as atman, or the soul. He talked about the multiplicity of religion. He said despite the fact that the beliefs in Do You! had been touched upon before, he wrote the book because "a lot of our people aren't spoken to directly."

When he opened the floor, the questions rained in: Could he talk about why Public Enemy was fired from Def Jam? (He said they weren't fired.) Could he listen to their CD? (Sure, but the last big acts he signed were Ludacris and Jay-Z.) Or read their book? (No.) Is Houston a waste of time for a fashion designer? (Not really, but you have to be around like-minded people.)

Another person asked about a topic Simmons has been outspoken on in recent months; how much responsibility hip-hop bears for drug use and violence.

"The conditions of the community are what we have to look at," said Simmons, "not the poets who describe them."

A local music producer in the crowd, "Legendary" Haime, wanted some of Simmons' luck or money to rub off on him. He wanted to talk to the "Grandfather" about how to make tons of money.

Simmons, again, was philosophical. The payoff is not really important, he said. The process is the reward.

50 Cent, T.I., Ne-Yo, Ciara at BET Awards '07 on June 26

50 Cent

Sparks will be flying throughout the three-hour live telecast that begins at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CDT (tape delayed in the Mountain and Pacific zones) as some of the hottest stars in music, television, movies and sports bring the heat and burn the house down!

Joining rap royalty T.I. and 50 Cent on the performance lineup are R&B crooner Ne-Yo, sultry superstar Ciara, and gospel great Yolanda Adams. The roster of A-list celebrities handing out trophies includes Hollywood's biggest names, including Academy Award nominees Terrence Howard and Queen Latifah, television mogul and former supermodel, Tyra Banks, actor/comedian Katt Williams, Dirty-South hip-hop heavyweight, Big Boi of Outkast and five-time world champion, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. among others. Technology Meets Luxury: Prada makes a cell phone!

Prada -- one of the world's premier fashion houses -- has chosen to partner with LG to produce the very first Prada-branded cell phone.

THE GOOD: The LG Prada cell phone has a sophisticated and stylish design that is sure to turn heads. Its 3-inch display is stunning, and the touch screen interface is surprisingly usable. It also has a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player, and a document viewer.

THE BAD: The LG Prada does not have 3G support, which is unfortunate for such an expensive phone. While the touch screen interface isn't too difficult to use, it still requires a little bit of a learning curve. A few of the phone's external buttons are a little hard to press, and the microSD card slot is inconveniently located behind the battery.

THE BOTTOM LINE: While the LG Prada is a gorgeous phone with a stunning touch screen display, its simple feature set may not justify its hefty price tag. That said, if you want one of the most fashionable phones available, the LG Prada is definitely the phone to get.

Kelly Rowland: New Album, New Man

Kelly Rowland’s life is undergoing some changes.

Former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland is reportedly dating English soccer player Kieran Richardson. The footballer, a member of the Manchester United, met Rowland backstage at one of her shows in London two months ago. According to the British newspaper, The Sun, the two have been dating ever since. A source says things are “starting to heat up.”

Last year Rowland broke off her engagement to Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys after they filled out a “know your mate” questionnaire and discovered they barely knew each other.

A blossoming romance is not the only thing new in Rowland’s life. Her new CD, Ms. Kelly, is due to drop on July 3. The album features producer Scott Storch and songwriter Solange Knowles—yes, BeyoncĂ©’s sister. Hmm… shouldn’t she be songwriting for a certain someone else who used to be in Destiny’s Child?

Kimora Lee Simmons Models For Simmons Jewelry Company Ad Campaign

Kimora Lee Simmons has been chosen for a new print advertising campaign for her and Russell Simmons' company, Simmons Jewelry Company.

The campaign, which will premiere in both Vanity Fair's and Ebony's July issue, focuses on the company's Green Initiative collection that, in part, gives back to Africa.

The ad campaign will feature a sexy shot of Kimora naked from the waist up in shadow, except for her arms, which are covered in Green Bracelets. The copy reads, "Green: Empower Yourself Through Others." With every purchase of a Green Bracelet, fifty percent of the net profits go to the Diamond Empowerment Fund to support educational programs in Africa.

The collection's Green Bracelet, made from green malachite and a rough, African diamond that is Kimberley Process compliant -- was the first Green Initiative piece available and celebrities have made it a must have item. Penelope Cruz, Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, Gabrielle Union, Serena Williams, Eddie Murphy, T.I. and others have been seen wearing the bracelet.

The collection was inspired by Russell's trip to Africa to see how diamonds were empowering Africans where they are a natural resource. Upon returning from that trip, Simmons created the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.), an international, non-profit organization, with a mission to raise money for educational programs to uplift the people and communities of Africa.

The ad will hit newsstands on Wednesday June 6. It will also run in additional magazines this fall.

Russell Simmons Denies Gay Rumors

Russell Simmons recently addressed rumors of living a gay lifestyle -- brought forth by gay rapper Caushun, who claimed that the hip-hop mogul lives a closet homosexual lifestyle and planned to expose it -- shooting down the rumors flat out.

Cashun -- who was recently exposed by his manager as a fraud with no musical talent -- claimed to have acquired Simmons' Blackberry, which held secret "steamy message" between him and another man. But, in an interview with the Dallas Voice, Simmons dismissed the rumor, saying Cashun was using the allegations as a tool to gain fame.

"Which came first? Me losing my Blackberry after being single for a year-and-a-half or Caushun trying to expose me for being gay?" Simmons questioned during the interview.

"Don't drag me into an interview that's lower than my person -- a catty-ass he-said, she-said... I believe gay people deserve dignity," he continued. "Caushun doesn't mean nothing to me. He's not worth it. Essentially he wants to make himself famous. I thought he was a good rapper."

Although Simmons denied he was gay, he did say he is supportive of gay rights. "Listen, I'm not gay," he said. "If I was, I would have the gift of another burden, and I would probably be instantly out. I fight for gay rights all the time. How about that?"

Ivan Matias, Cashun's manager, blew the lid off the gay rapper's career earlier this year, when he said in an interview with Allhiphop.com that he had actually created the identify for the rapper, and wrote and performed all the material that originally got the Cashun character a buzz.

Matias revealed that Caushun was created when, as a prank, he called a hip-hop station and pretended to be a flamboyantly gay rapper. Matias, a straight man, then recorded demos and passed them to radio stations as the work of Caushun. The lie then snowballed, and Matias enlisted Jason Herndon to portray the public face of Caushun.

As his buzz grew, Cashun caught the attention of Kimora Lee Simmons, who almost signed him to her Baby Phat Records imprint. That's when Herndon tried to push Matias out, but after he was arrested for identity theft, the lies began to unravel and his rap career halted.

Late last year, MediaTakeOut.com revealed that Cashun -- or at least the face of Cashun -- was planning to release a tell-all book titled The Gay Superhead that would expose several hip-hop superstars as closet homosexuals, including Kimora and Russell Simmons. But, obstacles got into the way because Cashun had signed a confidentiality agreement with Kimora that would bar him to speaking publically about anything he witnessed during the time he spent with her.

To date, no further information has surfaced regarding the book and Cashun seems to have vanished, but Matias told MediaTakeOut that he did not sign the same agreement and claimed he had enough to go ahead with the book himself.

The artist will make her film debut in "Mama, I Want To Sing!," which begins shooting this month in Baton Rouge, La., and is due for theatrical release in 2008.

Dos and don'ts of summer fashion

Baby Phat 2007

Fashion is like anything else: If you want to stay in the game, you have to know the rules. Summer in the city can be unbearable if you don't know how to dress for it. Here are a few tips.

Don't wear your skirts too short. They may be cute and fun, but when you sit down on the subway, your skin touches the seat -- not the best feeling on a hot day.

Do wear a drifty dress that reaches to just below the knee.

Don't wear rolled-up socks. They went out with the '70s.
Do wear cute little anklets.

Don't carry your valuables around in a backpack -- don't make things easy for a pickpocket.
Do carry a messenger bag close to your body.

Don't insist on wearing all black. It's far too hot.
Do wear light colors and fun prints that don't attract heat. Try ice-cream colored linens or bold, bright cottons.

Don't wear blouses that are too sheer.
Do wear flax-colored linens for an airy feel without overexposure.

Don't try to go sightseeing in stilettos.
Do choose a great pair of mesh Pumas. They're fashionable and comfy for walking around town.

Don't try to be Carrie Bradshaw. Remember, that was television.

Mom jeans are fashion disaster

Almost everyone has at least one pair of jeans.

Fashion experts cringe when they look around because too many women are wearing “mom jeans.” They have a tapered leg, a backside that leaves you looking flat and a waist band that doubles as a push-up bra.

But no one has to wear them!

"Women who still want to wear their denim but yet they want to cover. They want to tummy tuck, they want to lift the bottom and they also are very slimming and so it hides a little bit," explains Nichole Martinez, who works at Dillard’s in Norfolk.

Look for embellished pockets to give your backside a lift.

Stretch jeans promise to flatten your tummy, lift your backside and allow you to fit into a smaller size than you usually wear.

It will take some time to find the perfect jeans because you’ll need to try on several pairs in different styles and sizes. Also, the right pair of jeans is an investment. You’ll likely drop $80 to $130, so make sure you get the right ones.

Fashion Designers of America's 25th Annual Awards

Heidi Klum, model Liya Kebede, Michael Kors and Debra Messing: Doesn't the designer seem to be adoring the attention from his muses just a little too much?

The gorgeous and the glamorous turned out at New York's Public Library last night for the Council of Fashion Designers of America's 25th annual awards ceremony.

Oprah & Ralph Lauren: If Oprah does for fashion what she has done for the publishing industry, expect polo players to be plastered everywhere next season.

Society Gone Wild; Porn-Driven, 'Look-at-Me' Culture Empowers Sexiness

SOCIALITE AND "PORN STAR" PARIS HILTON

Porn used to be relegated to a video hidden in the bottom drawer, or a magazine under the mattress. Today, it's part of everyday life.

Hugh Hefner's girlfriends have become TV's "girls next door.'' Porn stars have MySpace pages and do voiceovers for video games. And while "porn on demand'' is standard for hotel TVs and upgraded cable packages, it's even easier to find it with a few clicks on the computer.

In April, more than a third of the U.S. Internet audience visited sites that fit into the online "adult'' category, according to comScore Media Metrix.

So the message is clear: In today's world, sex doesn't just sell. The pervasiveness of porn has made sexiness - from subtle to raunchy - a much-sought-after attribute online, at school and even at work.

Many agree that the trend has had a particularly strong influence on young women - in some cases, taking shape as an unapologetic embracing of sexuality and exhibitionism.

"I am one of those girls,'' says Holly Eglinton, a 31-year-old Canadian who recently won a talent search competition to appear as an unclothed newscaster on the Internet's "Naked News.'' She auditioned after meeting a producer for the show on a social networking site where she's posted provocative photos of herself - an increasingly common practice.

For Eglinton, taking off her clothes for an Internet audience was freeing, fun and a little rebellious.

"It's something that sort of suits my personality,'' she says. "I'm kind of an extrovert and a bit of a camera hog, a poser.''

It's a prevalent sentiment in our look-at-me culture. But many wonder if it really is empowering, especially for younger women and girls who try to emulate what's already on the Web.

Too often, educators and health professionals say, the results are cases of "Girls Gone Wild'' - gone wild.

Michael Simon, a therapist and high school counselor in the San Francisco Bay area, has seen an increasing number of girls and young women in his private practice after episodes in which they undressed in front of a webcam for people they met online.

"Instead of pornography or performative sexuality being one choice among many ways of being sexual, it's essentially become the standard of sexiness,'' says Simon. "It's also the standard by which a man or woman is a prude, depending on how much they embrace that kind of sexuality.''

Yvonne K. Fulbright, a sexologist and author who co-hosts the "Sex Files'' program on Sirius satellite radio, also has seen the shift in attitude.

She's posted messages on Craigslist looking for people who want to comment on various topics for the show - and, instead, often receives responses from young women who send descriptions of their breast and waist sizes.

"They're under the impression that they can be the next big thing,'' Fulbright says. "Unfortunately, for a lot of females that means taking off your clothes and being sexual.

"It's a really warped sense of what it means to be sexy.''

Beyonce's table top dance for two fans

On the town: Beyonce returning to her hotel this morning

She may be a diva, but there were two fans Beyonce allowed into the VIP area at her London party at the weekend - and they had the best view in the house.

The 25-year-old singer demanded two huge electric fans be installed at Paper nightclub in Regent Street to help keep her cool.

The result was more like something from one of her music videos as she ended up dancing on the tables with the fans blowing her hair.

One party-goer said: "She was boogieing to a couple of her own tracks, like Naughty Girl and Beautiful Liar, but she really went crazy when they played the old school favourite Push It by Salt-N-Pepa.

"At one stage she was doing the hair for one of her backing singers, which looked quite sweet. She certainly seemed really easy going."

The Crazy In Love singer, whose new fiance Jay-Z is in Cannes, has been in London since Saturday and has been staying at the Mandarin Oriental.

She has been spotted around town with with her younger sister Solange.

Plus....

Beyonce wowed clubbers in the early hours yesterday after performing at Wembley Arena. She took her 30-strong entourage, which included all her backing dancers and singers, to Paper where they partied until 3.30am.

Beyonce began the evening by grabbing a microphone and saying "hi" to the crowd on the dancefloor.

But it wasn't all sweetness. She allowed photographers to take pictures for only 15 seconds, and banned smoking in Paper's VIP room to protect her voice.

That's a bit more like the Beyonce we all know.

Good Chemistry Hard to Resist - Bassett and Glover on "Gospel Hill"

Angela Bassett and Danny Glover are set to begin shooting a new movie titled "Gospel Hill" in South Carolina. Hill" is the story of a former sheriff and former civil-rights activist who revisit the 30-year-old death of another rights worker. Making his directorial debut is actor Giancarlo Esposito, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Also appearing in the film are Julia Stiles, Simon Baker, and rapper-actor Rza. Rza and Esposito both appeared together in the Jennifer Aniston-Clive Owen film, "Derailed".

"Superhead" and Ne-Yo?

Karrine Steffans, author of the bestselling book 'Confessions of a Video Vixen,' appeared on 'The Ed Lover Show' on New York City's Power 105.1 FM denying internet rumors about her seeing R&B star Ne-Yo. "I've met him a couple of times. He's a nice guy," she offered, before shooting down the dating claims. What Steffans didn't mention on air was that she was spotted last week outside The Roxy in West Hollywood canoodling with her ex-boyfriend Bill Maher. I wonder if they've rekindled their romance? Maybe we'll have to wait until her sophomore tome 'The Vixen Diaries' (Warner Books) comes out in September to find out.

Sarah Jessica Parker's New Fashion Line Hit's Steve and Barry's

IT’LL be hard not to bite when Sarah Jessica Parker’s new fashion line, Bitten, launches, because it’s so darn cheap.

On Thursday, the former “Sex and the City” star launches Bitten at Steve & Barry’s shopping mall stores nationwide - with leather peep-toe shoes for only $9.98, to ankle-zip straight-leg jeans for $14.98.

That’s right. Everything is under $20.

But the 42-year-old actress, known for boldly mixing thrifty vintage items with expensive designer bags and shoes, has been tempting us, modeling her new line all around the Big Apple.

“The collection is inspired by the clothes she wears when she’s not on the red carpet,” says Howard Schacter, chief partnership officer at Steve & Barry’s. “With a couple of hundred dollars, women will be able to create an entire wardrobe.”

Key items in the 150-piece collection (which will grow to about 500 in the fall) include a black cocktail dress with grosgrain ribbon ($19.98), striped crew-neck shirts ($7.98), a two-button blazer ($19.98), hoodies ($14.98), and a collection of jeans and pants ($14.98-$19.98 each).

“It’s the stuff we wear every day,” says Parker on BittenSJP.com. “It’s to the office, it’s to a cocktail party, it’s to go to bed at night, it’s to get your newspaper in the morning, sit around your college dorm, it’s to have a slumber party with your girlfriends.”

College logo chain Steve & Barry’s sought out the former “Sex and the City” star because they wanted someone who “would passionately believe” in creating a women’s line, and had “no interest in creating another celebrity vanity line,” says Schacter.

New Palette Make Up

Say goodbye to messy, weighty make-up bags. Celebrity makeup artist, Tim Maurer has created Palette. Palette contains powders, creams, mascara, brushes and a mirror in one small case. The Palette is about the size a small clutch bag which is convenient. According to the inventor, there is no chance of your powders getting mixed together because of the magnetized claps that securely seals each item from the others.

Palette is designed so that you can change the items stored in it as needed. An empty palette case with brushes and mascara will cost $165, while each snap on makeup container will cost between $18 and $45 once placed on the market.

Maurer lists among his clients singer Patti LaBelle, Senator and former First Lady Hillary Clinton and actress Jodie Foster.

Vinegar and Beauty

Vinegar isn’t just for Easter time. There are a wide range of uses for vinegar. It is commonly known it can be used for cleaning (never mix with bleach though!). What is less common is how vinegar can become part of a beauty routine and increase the effectiveness of a diet. Cider vinegar is inexpensive and can be picked up during regular shopping trips to the grocery store-no special ordering needed!
Apple cider vinegar has been reported to do the following:

Stop dandruff
Clear skin
Regulate blood sugar
To stop dandruff-wash hair as usual. Use diluted apple cider vinegar to rinse hair. Try using your usual conditioner before rinsing and then after rinsing to see what works best for you and your hair type.

To clear skin-mix one cup water and 2 tsp cider vinegar on trouble spots. Vinegar has a high pH and can assist in stopping breakouts on skin. With this and any new product, always test it first. Some people choose the skin on inner upper arm to test because if there is a problem it is not noticeable.

To regulate blood sugar-2 Tbs in salad dressing or dissolved in water helps prevent blood sugar from spiking, especially after high-carb meals.

Stable blood sugar levels have the following benefits:

Decreased hunger
Reduced cravings
Less mood swings
Increased energy
Ways to add cider vinegar to diet:

Drink a glass of water with cider vinegar mixed in about an hour before meals.
Splash a little cider vinegar on vegetables.
Use cider vinegar in salad dressings.
External beauty can be enhanced by incorporating vinegar in beauty and diet routines.

Kanye West previews 'Graduation'

Kanye West's third album, "Graduation," isn't due out till summer's end, but the Grammy-winning, multimillion-selling rapper-producer is already leaking studio tracks on the Internet.

A batch of new West material has surfaced on a 25-track mix tape assembled by the producer. "Can't Tell Me Nothing (The Official Mixtape)" includes "Us Placers," a collaboration with rappers Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams, billing themselves as CRS. Thom Yorke's "The Eraser," the title track from the Radiohead singer's 2006 solo album, serves as an eerie backdrop for a meditation on the lure of wealth, the perils of fame and the cruelty of fate. The three rappers' verses are loosely organized around Yorke's haunting refrain: "The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear."

Though West is a major-label recording artist, he has consistently leaked his music to the public through back-channel mix tapes, a burgeoning underground source for breaking new artists and laying the groundwork for new releases by established rappers. West floated his breakthrough song "Through the Wire" on the Internet long before it officially surfaced on his 2004 debut album, "The College Dropout."

Beyonce and Jay-Z Engaged!

It's about damn time!

It seems that pop star Beyonce may soon be walking down the aisle as beau Jay-Z popped the question during a luxury holiday in Cannes at the end of May.

The couple, who have been dating since 2002, are reportedly getting set for a big autumn wedding in Hawaii.

"This will be the hip-hop wedding to end all hip-hop weddings," the News of the World quoted a close pal, as saying.

Jay-Z, who cancelled a tour of the US promoting his Roc-A-Fella business empire to see his lady love perform in the UK, has apparently promised Beyonce "the biggest diamond she can fit on her finger" when she decides on a design for her engagement ring.

Beyonce had recently revealed that she wanted to settle down and have kids.

"I want to get married and really want a family—in a perfect world I'd have two boys and a girl. You know someone loves you by the way he treats you and respects you. Me and Jay respect each other," she said.

A spokesman for Jay-Z however refused to comment on the couple’s reported engagement or wedding plans.

TGT tour has the ladies in mind!

The R&B super group of Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank aim to bump up the swoon factor.

IF there's a concert tour with a more appropriate title than TGT's forthcoming "The Shirts Off Tour," we haven't heard it. A meeting of the minds (and glistening abs and chiseled jawlines) of R&B pinups Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank, the trio recently joined forces as a super group with a single mission — to please all the ladies, all the time.

"It's going to be the ultimate female experience," an obviously giddy Tyrese Gibson said about the group's fall tour. "It's going to be an escape for women, an escape from their everyday lives."

The three singers have been friends and fellow cads for a decade (Gibson was best man at Ginuwine's wedding), but they only collaborated for the first time on a remix of Tank's pleading new single "Please Don't Go." With 13 albums and a slew of hit singles among them, TGT is something of a Traveling Wilburys of R&B, if Bob Dylan had V-muscles to stop traffic.

They've even cribbed a bit from the R. Kelly manual of fantastically loony concept albums, as the lyrics to their "Please Don't Go" remix are ripe for plot twists on future singles.

"You're listening to us having a conversation about what we did for the girls in our lives to make them want to stop messing with us," Gibson said. "It's set up to have sequels."

A short list of producers for a full-length album is being bandied about, and their tour will feature a mix of solo material from each member and new TGT cuts. Supergroups are always dicey propositions, but TGT is admirably on-message in their intentions for the tour.

"There's going to be a lot of female emotions [at the shows]," Gibson said. "They're going to be horny, happy and screaming. We're going to shut down a whole floor of hotel rooms."

Beauty experts slap health warning on lipsticks past their sell-by date

Vintage fashion may be fabulous, but old make-up is putting women's health and beauty at risk, according to new research that has found the British tradition of collecting antiques extends to cosmetics and toiletries.
Show us a woman's handbag, say experts from the College of Optometrists and we will show you a 10-year-old lipstick, a five-year-old tube of mascara and a jar of rancid moisturiser, all teeming with harmful bacteria.

'It's ironic that women spend so much time and money on cosmetics to make themselves look beautiful, and yet in using it, they are making themselves vulnerable to infections that are anything but attractive,' said Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser to the college.

The survey found that while women are keen to experiment with new cosmetics, they are less keen on throwing out the old. This morning, one in five women in her late thirties or forties will have put on her make-up using a product over five years old.
'All food has an expiration date and people don't think twice about throwing away milk when that date comes,' said Blakeney. 'The make-up you use should be as fresh as the food you consume. But women keep their make-up for many years, not to mention sharing it with friends and applying it in ways that could lead to serious damage.'

The best test, says Sebastian Parsons, managing director of the cosmetics and toiletry company Dr Hauschka, is to use your eyes and nose. 'I recently found some cleansing cream - the tube had been opened and I'd forgotten about it,' he said. 'The first half inch had gone off, but the rest was absolutely fine. It's always worth opening up the container and having a go.'

Use-by dates

Make-up, once opened, expires at

3-6 months Mascara

6-8 months Liquid foundation, cream foundation, concealer, cleanser, moisturiser

1 year Pressed powder, loose powder, shimmer powder, eye shadow, blush, lip gloss, lipstick, toner

18 months Eye and lip pencils
